8th Street Parking Update

Over the winter, the lights installed in our new 65-space parking lot at 8th and I Street S.E. last summer seemed to go out all at once. DDOT has recently repaired these, providing a much brighter parking lot. A sign is being produced to inform drivers and alleviate the demand for on-street parking.

DDOT has also agreed to cut the price of parking! Later this summer, rates will be adjusted to $ .75 per hour, the lowest in DC.

Taste of 8th

Barracks Row’s Taste of 8th, one of Capitol Hill’s can’t-miss spring happenings, is Saturday, April 30 from 1-4 pm. Barracks Row the five blocks of Eighth Street SE between Pennsylvania Ave. and M St., SE, is well-known as a United Nations of cuisines, and this year’s Taste of 8th continues the multicultural tradition.

Over fifteen of Barracks Row’s restaurants will present inventive sample tastings of their signature dishes serving from tables set up right in front of each restaurant. During Taste of 8th, Barracks Row Main Street will not only present the corridor’s newest restaurants and showcase old favorites, but will also introduce its new bakery: Hello Cupcake, featuring a broad selection of all-American cupcakes in unique flavors.

Tickets for Taste of 8th can be purchased before the event from the Barracks Row Main Street website or from the following 8th Street retailers: Homebody, Hill’s Kitchen and Chateau Animaux. Tickets are $5.00 each or five for $20.00.

Funding Restored for Main Streets in DC Budget

Print PDF

Clean TeamAfter hours of testimony from Main Street Executive Directors, Board members, and Clean Team members during December’s hearings about Main Streets serving as “economic engines” for the District and generating much-needed tax revenues, DC Main Street programs anxiously awaited the outcome of the budget process. It is with great joy that we can now report that funding for both Main Streets and the Clean Teams has been restored! Barracks Row Main Street would like to thank the City Council and the Mayor’s Office for recognizing the value of our Main Street and others throughout the city.

This funding is critical to the success of all DC Main Streets programs, and especially to Barracks Row. Our Main Street grant provides for critical operating support and funding for our business retention and recruitment programs. Without it, the cutbacks would have been severe.

The Clean Team funding pays for supplementary services above and beyond what the Capitol Hill BID provides. This grant keeps three formerly homeless/incarcerated individuals employed while simultaneously beautifying and maintaining Barracks Row. Thousands of bags of trash and dozens of graffiti tags are removed with this crucial funding. Just this fall, BRMS used some of these funds to support the “Men in Blue” to plant hundreds of bulbs in treeboxes to bring color and vibrancy to the Row this spring and every spring hereafter.

Our work, however, is far from finished! Please show your support for Barracks Row Main Street by clicking “Donate” above and making a contribution through Network for Good. There’s always something happening on the Row, and we need these dollars to be able to continue helping the Row to grow.
